“Which lens costs less?”

“Which optical solution makes the most sense for the complete product?”

Time to Market Matters Too

Development time is another important consideration.

A standard lens can often be evaluated quickly, making it useful during prototyping and early-stage development.

Custom optics require more engineering work, testing, and validation.

That doesn’t necessarily make custom design the wrong choice.

In some projects, identifying the need for a custom solution early can actually prevent months of trying to force an unsuitable standard component into the system.

A Simple Way to Decide

Ask yourself these questions:

Does an existing lens meet the key optical requirements?

If yes, a standard lens may be the best option.

Are you compromising the system to accommodate the lens?

If yes, it may be time to consider custom optics.

Are physical dimensions unusually restricted?

Custom design may provide more flexibility.

Does the application require specific optical performance?

A custom solution may be worth investigating.

Will the lens be used in a product manufactured at scale?

Consistency, reliability, and production requirements should be considered from the beginning.

Standard and Custom Can Work Together

It’s also important to remember that the decision doesn’t have to be either-or.

A project might begin with standard optics during prototyping and transition to a custom design as requirements become clearer.

Alternatively, standard lenses may be used for some products while custom optical assemblies are developed for more specialized systems.
